I was definitely Army barmy throughout my military career, but to be blunt, that was simply because everything good in my life stemmed from my service. I wasted my education, despite being relatively bright; that was because I was too interested in being one of the lads, getting into all sorts of silly scrapes, and generally lacking focus. Driven by an urge to make money at a very young age, I was naive enough to leave school at the first opportunity, thinking an apprenticeship as a stonemason was the route to success. That rather immature, ill-conceived master plan didn’t take long to evaporate; there I was, stuck on a building site during a typical Scottish winter in the Highlands.

I needed a plan B and the army duly provided it. Setting off for the Army Apprentice College (AAC), Harrogate, wondering how my Doric accent would ever be understood, little did I realise what a momentous decision I had taken, and just how much my life was about to change forever. The people I met and with whom I served throughout my career have become my family, about whom I care with all my heart. Explaining this relationship to non- service personnel can be difficult, because it’s hard to understand unless you have experienced it; when we said we had each other’s back, we meant it, to the point that it cost lives. The team is everything and we won or lost together. I served in the world’s finest Army, of that I have no doubt.

I laughed, cried, and remembered those that never came home, but I want everyone to know that we had fun, and lots of it. I’ve told my story with that very much at the fore. It was always going to be my story told my way. I hope that those who read it,enjoy it. My Corps allowed me to be the best I could be and I will always be grateful for that. Certa Cito.
